I will get more pictures of the mantle after the renovations are complete and the finish has been applied.

Note how the panel opens for access to the electrical outlet the other side has an identical door that accesses the gas shut off with the doors closed there is no indication that they are even there.

The moldings are unattached in these photos, the mirror ontop is detached and of course the finish needs to be applied, but you can see how much work was needed to gain the additional depth.

This is a fireplace mantle going into a 150 year old Saratoga home that is being renovated.  Originally there was no fireplace or flue on the second floor in this wall.  The owner desiring a fireplace, is having a ventless gas insert installed and bought a used mantle that fit the look of the house.  Unfortunately the mantle had was both water damaged as well as too shallow to accommodate the gas insert. I was asked to add 11 inches to the depth of the mantle, and create access doors for the utilities.  The original finish is to be stripped by the owners wife and then the entire piece refinished to look like it was built this way.
