If you have different layouts setup for your laptop's lcd, and an external screen, you can run both xservers at the same time:
# login and type (assuming you have an external layout setup):
$ startx -- -layout external
# Now suppose you want unplug and use your internal screen, but you want to keep everything as it is on your external screen:
# Hit C-A-F2, to get to a new virtual console, login and type:
$ startx -- :1
# Now you can use C-A-F7 and C-A-F8 to switch between your internal and external screen servers.
